Crafting Your Dream Primary Suite: A Sanctuary of Comfort and Elegance

Your primary suite is more than just a bedroom; it’s your personal sanctuary, a space where you can unwind, rejuvenate, and find solace after a long day. Whether you’re remodeling an existing space or designing from scratch, creating the perfect primary suite requires careful consideration of both functionality and aesthetics. In this blog post, we’ll explore key elements to consider when crafting your dream primary suite, transforming it into a haven of comfort and luxury.

Space Planning and Layout:

Begin by assessing the available space and envisioning how you want to utilize it. Consider factors such as the size of the bedroom, the layout of the bathroom, and any additional features you wish to incorporate, such as a walk-in closet or a sitting area. Aim for a layout that promotes flow and accessibility while maximizing comfort and functionality.

We are often asked what is a good size for the primary or master bedroom. 15x15 is usually a size that often accommodates furniture requests without the space feeling uncomfortable. Larger areas will be needed if you want to incorporate a dedicated sitting area. We have a 8x13 space next to the bedroom that was originally designed as the office but we will be converting that into a sitting room. It would also be a great space for a home gym, nursery, or art room.

Luxurious Bedding and Furnishings:

The focal point of any primary suite is, of course, the bed. If budget allows invest in high-quality bedding, including a plush mattress, soft linens, and an array of pillows to ensure a restful night’s sleep. Choose furnishings that complement your style and enhance the overall ambiance of the room, whether it’s a sleek, modern design or a cozy, traditional aesthetic.

Even if you don’t have a large budget, do your best to use coordinating pieces so that your room feels intentional. Thrift stores can be a great place to source unique items, vintage or antique furniture, and art pieces that will make your space feel elevated.

Spa-Inspired Bathroom:

Transform your bathroom into a spa-like retreat by incorporating luxurious features such as a soaking tub, a spacious walk-in shower, and elegant fixtures. Don’t forget to add personal touches such as plush towels, fragrant candles, and soothing bath products to elevate the experience further.

We chose not to have a separate tub area in our bathroom but instead added larger vanity spaces. We don’t have a dedicated linen closet and use the deep drawers to store towels and extra toiletries.

Customized Storage Solutions:

Maximize organization and efficiency in your primary suite with customized storage solutions tailored to your needs. Invest in a well-designed walk-in closet with ample shelving, drawers, and hanging space to keep your wardrobe neat and easily accessible. Consider built-in storage options for other areas of the room, such as bedside tables with integrated drawers or a storage bench at the foot of the bed.

This is one of the spaces that we haven’t finished in our home, but I am really looking forward to designing it. If you look at our floor plan it’s obvious that we went oversized with the closet area, but we wanted our entire space to work for us. Over the years we’ve found that some of the original goals have changed so we are shifting how we are finishing the storage areas in our closet.

Thoughtful Lighting Design:

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and enhancing the ambiance of your primary suite. Incorporate a combination of overhead lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting to create layers of illumination that are both functional and visually appealing. Consider installing dimmer switches or smart lighting controls to adjust the intensity and color temperature to suit different activities and moods.

We use 4” recessed lights above our bed so that we didn’t “need” lamps on our nightstand. We also have sconces that provide the perfect amount of light especially in the evening. Almost every light in our home is on a dimmer switch, and the bedroom ones we use the most often. There are spots left for chandelier lighting… we’ll get to that at some point!
